Senad Lulic saw red in the dramatic 3-2 defeat to Inter, but feels Lazio “did not lose out on the Champions League tonight.”

The Aquile only needed a point to be sure of fourth place and were leading 2-1 until the 78th minute, when a Mauro Icardi penalty, Lulic’s second bookable offence and a Matias Vecino header turned it all around.

“Aside from this evening, the season will remain a positive one,” insisted Lulic on Sky Sport Italia.

“We did not lose out on the Champions League tonight, as I felt we lost it two or three rounds ago. We should’ve finished it off earlier and we had the opportunities.

“There is enormous disappointment, unfortunately we were unable to end the season on a high. We’re right on the verge of being one of the best in Italy and in Europe, so we must build on the positives and improve next year.”

Stefan de Vrij won’t be in the squad, as he has already signed for Inter as a free agent.

Many said the defender should not have played considering the very strange conflict of interests.

“Too much has been said about this. He put in a great performance and set the example for everyone. He was very disappointed by the error on the penalty, but he fought to the end with us. I wish him all the best at Inter.”
