“Of course I would like to work with Ancelotti and the new Coach has already called me, so we’ll see,” noted Mertens from the Belgian World Cup training camp.

“He asked me if I wanted to stay. Was he convincing? Yes, very…

“I don’t know what happened with Sarri and I haven’t really understood how things went down. It seemed so strange when I heard the news.

“Sarri hasn’t really been fired yet, but Ancelotti is already our new Coach. I expect things will be clearer soon.”

Meanwhile, Mertens looked back on his Serie A regrets after missing out on the Scudetto, again blaming the team watching Juventus fightback to beat Inter 3-2 the night before Napoli lost to Fiorentina.

“We saw the game in the hotel and there was euphoria when it seemed as if Inter had won, but I don’t think we lost the title there. We’ve got to learn from our mistakes, but I certainly wouldn’t watch that game live again.”
