Sampdoria’s Lucas Torreira expresses his delight after securing a place in Uruguay’s World Cup squad.
The 22-year-old’s successful season for the Blucerchiati, in which he made 38 appearances and scored four goals, means he will be on his country’s plane to Russia despite having only made his international debut in March.
And Torreira, who has been heavily linked with a transfer to Serie A runners up Napoliof late, believes his inclusion is the result of hard work.
“I am very happy,” the midfielder told Sport890.uy. “This call up is the fruit of a lot of hard work.
“Seeing my dad’s tears of joy was something lovely and unique.”
One of the key figures to miss out on Oscar Tabarez’s 23-man squad was Torreira’s Samp teammate, Gaston Ramirez.
“Gaston took it badly, you can never be prepared for these things.”
