The Belgium international just turned 31 and was linked to an exit after Maurizio Sarri was replaced by Carlo Ancelotti.

He was linked with swoops from Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid.

However, the €28m release clause in his contract – valid only for clubs abroad – expires at midnight Italian time tonight.

As nobody has activated it, that means any club that wants Mertens will have to negotiate with Napoli.

He is under contract with the Partenopei until June 2020.
