A statement on Leeds’ official website confirms Bielsa has signed a two-year contract with the EFL Championship club, which includes the option for a third season.

“I am thrilled to welcome Marcelo and his staff to Leeds United,” said chairman Andrea Radrizzani.

“He is a coach that I have admired for many years and when the opportunity arose to bring him to Elland Road, we made it our top priority for the summer.

“Marcelo has a wealth of experience and he will use that to create a new culture and a winning mentality at our football club.

“I would like to thank Victor Orta and Angus Kinnear for all of the hard work that has gone into this appointment and I look forward to progressing together.”

The 62-year-old is widely credited with pioneering the high-intensity, short-passing style that helped Barcelona and Spain dominate world football between 2008 and 2012.

He has also inspired a generation of Coaches, including Maurizio Sarri, Pep Guardiola and Mauricio Pochettino, although he is best known in Italy for abandoning Lazio just two days after he was appointed as many years ago.

Leeds are owned by Radrizzani, who helped broker Suning Group’s takeover of Inter in 2016 and bought the Championship club from another Italian – former Cagliari owner Massimo Cellino.
