Palermo lodged an appeal to freeze Frosinone’s promotion after tonight’s play-off and threatened to sue Coach Moreno Longo for claiming their “finances aren’t in order.”
The ill-tempered Serie B promotion play-off final was chaotic from the start, but the situation is deteriorating rapidly even after the game.
Frosinone eventually won 2-0, including a goal in stoppages that sparked a pitch invasion and effectively ended the match 90 seconds early.
It’s not yet clear if Palermo’s reasons for appealing to have the result frozen are to do with this early finish or the Frosinone players caught on camera throwing loose footballs on to the pitch to break play up during the final minutes of the encounter.
“We have lodged a written appeal to have the result frozen,” Palermo President Giovanni Giammarva told Sky Sport Italia.
He was further infuriated after Frosinone Coach Longo told the same television station that their promotion was fully deserved.
“We are a model club and the President should be thanked for building a new stadium and keeping the books balanced. Otherwise, a club would’ve gone into Serie A that didn’t have its finances in order.”
Palermo heard about these comments and threatened legal action.
“Longo’s statements stunned us. He should not have said such things. We will look into it and could take legal action. There is nothing to clarify with Longo right now, because he said things that go beyond the area of sport and it was a real lapse of judgment.
“We want to defend our club from this aggression.”
While Giammarva is technically the President of Palermo, the owner remains notoriously fiery character Maurizio Zamparini.
If he releases a statement or speaks to the media, the situation is bound to escalate.
