Dries Mertens turned down several offers this summer and is prepared to extend his Napoli contract to 2023, it’s reported.

The 31-year-old Belgium international had a release clause in his contract set at €28m, which expired on Friday at midnight.

According to RMC Sport, there had been proposals to activate it from Schalke 04, Shanghai Shenhua and Guangzhou Evergrande.

However, Mertens turned them all down, as his family is happy in Naples and he wants to begin the new era under Carlo Ancelotti after Maurizio Sarri’s departure.

It is even suggested he could sign a new deal holding him to the Stadio San Paolo until June 2023, adding an extra three years to his current contract.

He has been in Naples since 2013 and this season contributed 22 goals and 12 assists in 49 competitive games.
