Fabio Capello claims he rejected Inter ‘four or five times’ and Italy ‘once’ but believes he showed ‘strength’ to leave Roma for Juventus.

Capello was most recently linked with Inter through his last role as Coach of their Chinese sister club Jiangsu Suning, while the former Milan and Real Madrid boss had been put forward as a candidate to replace Giampiero Ventura as Italy’s CT.

“Inter? We’ve been close four or five times, but we’ve never been able to close a deal,” he told Corriere dello Sport.

“Inter? We’ve been close four or five times, but we’ve never been able to close a deal,” he told Corriere dello Sport.

“Let’s say that they once they pulled out late in the day and the next time it was me. Italy? I only refused them once, I had other things on my mind, other curiosities.”

Capello also famously suggested he would never coach Juve but ultimately left Roma for the Bianconeri in 2004.

“’Never’ to Juve? I said it but a year or two before. I resisted leaving Roma for five years: my last season there was really complicated, I realised that I had nothing more to give or say,” explained the 72-year-old.

“I used to go home unhappy and when you carry the burden of your work and live it with little joy, you must have the strength to detach yourself.”
