World Cup: Suarez books Uruguay spot

Uruguay are through to the Round of 16 and Saudi Arabia have been eliminated after Luis Suarez scored the only goal in Rostov-On-Don.

The goalkeeper flapped at a corner, allowing Luis Suarez to tap in the loose ball from close range. It was a fine way for Suarez to celebrate his 100th international cap.

Saudi Arabia did have chances to equalise, Hatan Bahbri blasting over from close range, but they lost Taiseer Al-Jassim with what seems to be a hamstring injury.

Suarez had a free kick beaten away and Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira’s shot was deflected just wide, but it was far from a classic match.

While certainly an improvement on their 5-0 defeat to hosts Russia, the Saudis fell to another slender Uruguay victory.

It is now between Russia and La Celeste to see who tops Group A, as Egypt and Saudi Arabia are eliminated.
