Ivan Perisic said Lionel Messi is “the best, but you can only achieve something if you play as a team” after Croatia crushed Argentina at the World Cup.
The Inter winger was in action this evening with club teammate Marcelo Brozovic in the 3-0 victory over Argentina, which sent Croatia through to the Round of 16.
“We did really well. In the locker room, we said that we had to defend stoutly and we did that,” Perisic told Mediaset in Italy.
“We had chances in the first half too, then the goals arrived after the break. We have six points, we deserved them and now we want to beat Iceland too.”
The victory was another hammer blow for Messi, who seems to be losing his long-distance battle with Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo.
“Messi is the best, just like Cristiano Ronaldo, but you can only achieve something if you play as a team. Argentina need to change something if they are to go forward.
“As for us, we’re on the right track to emulate what we did in France ’98 and must continue like this.”
Argentina drew their opener 1-1 with Iceland, so will go out if the Scandinavians beat Nigeria and get at least a draw with Croatia.
