Yong Lee thought he had given South Korea the early lead on 13 minutes, but his volley at the back post was denied by brave defending from Hirving Lozano, who flung his body in the way.

Guillermo Ochoa also fingertipped a header over the bar, but in their first real counter-attack, Mexico earned a penalty thanks to handball from Jang Hyun-Soo. Carlos Vela kept his cool and converted by sending the goalkeeper the wrong way.

Ki Sung-Yueng stung Ochoa’s gloves and Jo Hyeon-Woo flew to palm away a fierce Andres Guardado effort, but Mexico doubled their lead with another classic counter-attack, Lozano spreading it to the left for Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez to finish.

Korea almost got back into the game, but were unable to make the most of a poor Rafael Marquez back-pass. They did score a consolation goal in stoppages in some style, as Tottenham talent Son Heung-Min curled a stunner into the far top corner.
