There will be 3D technology used to make VAR more effective on offside rulings in Serie A from the 2018-19 season.
The introduction of Video Assistant Referees already cut the number of errors seen in Serie A last term, but there is always room for improvement.
“In technical terms, we will have 3D technology and make the issue of offside even more precise, as a few centimetres had caused a few problems in the past,” announced Serie A refereeing designator Nicola Rizzoli in a Press conference.
“Meanwhile, we want to underline the very positive data from the first season of VAR, with 20 per cent fewer yellow cards for dissent and 10 fewer red cards for the same reason.”
The Serie B promotion play-off final was dominated by the absence of VAR to decide even basic issues such as whether a foul was inside the box.
“The problem of using VAR in Serie B must be dealt with first by the Federation and then the Lega Serie B. We have to find out if there are the technical and financial conditions to achieve this.
“As things stand, the number of referees available for Serie B is not sufficient.”
