Sampdoria director Walter Sabatini said he is enjoying his new job, as “the prospects are different to Roma and Inter, so I have more fun.”

The chain-smoking technical director is relishing the role in the port city of Genoa.

“The sea air will be good for my lungs,” he told Rai Radio Due.

“We are working on a project that already exists, so I am called to resolve problems that aren’t here. What Samp want is to be more competitive and not rest on our laurels the way we did last season. We want a little more.

“Samp often played stellar football, but at times got complacent and didn’t produce the results they ought to be aiming for.”

Sabatini complained when he quit the Inter-Jiangsu Suning co-ordination role that his choices were limited by Financial Fair Play problems.

“At Samp, the prospects are different to Roma and Inter. It’s more similar to what it was at Palermo, so I have more fun with this type of work. It’s the kind of scouting job I really enjoy.”
