Montella is currently out of work after disappointing spells with Sampdoria, Milan and Sevilla, despite showing promise at Catania and Fiorentina earlier in his career.

“My relationship with Gattuso? It’s good,” continued the ex-Roma striker to Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I’d have taken his opportunity too. Before my sacking, he always told me, ‘don’t say we’re a strong team because it’s not like that.’

“In fact, expectations were too high, even if the squad wasn’t overrated. He’s young and he can grow in the role.

“The objective was the Champions League and I was riding those expectations too. Of course, seeing them out of Europe is remarkable. I never thought it’d happen.

“I think it was also a painful decision for UEFA, so it’ll have had its reasons.

“My mistakes? Everything must be in context, so I’d do it all again, including going to Sampdoria and Sevilla.

“In Spain, for example, we did very well in the Champions League and Copa del Rey but paid for our form in La Liga.

“The team I’d go back to? You’ll be surprised… Catania.”
