The 30-year-old was sent home early from Croatia’s World Cup squad after refusing to come off the bench as a substitute.

He was purchased from Fiorentina for a total of €25m plus bonuses last summer, but scored only six goals in all competition.

The move was a loan with obligation to buy and it looks as if Atleti will use that same formula to get Kalinic from Milan.

This can only be completed once Kevin Gameiro has been sold to Valencia, which in turn allows Simone Zaza to come to Milan.
