Arsenal have officially confirmed the signing of Sampdoria midfielder Lucas Torreira, for what is thought to be a €30m fee.

There has been the basis of a deal in place for some time, but the transfer couldn’t be completed while Uruguay were still in the World Cup.

This week though the midfielder flew out to London to complete the transfer, and he has now been officially announced as an Arsenal player.

The Gunners posted a video on their Twitter account to announce the signing, while Sampdoria released an official statement.

“U.C Sampdoria announces the outright sale to Arsenal FC of the player Lucas Sebastián Torreira,” the Blucerchiati confirmed.

“To the Uruguayan midfielder – 74 appearances and 4 goals in his experience as a Blucerchiato – we offer a sincere thank you for the commitment shown over these two seasons, and the greatest of luck for the rest of his career from President Massimo Ferrero and the whole club, with the pride of having believed in him and launched his career in top level football.”

Arsenal later released a statement of their own, including some quotes from Coach Unai Emery.

"In Lucas Torreira, we have signed a young player who is a very bright talent in the game," said the Spaniard.

"A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup

"He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing. We welcome Lucas to Arsenal and look forward to him joining us soon for pre-season."
