Mauro Icardi’s wife Wanda Nara said Argentina had to sack Jorge Sampaoli and bring in “a Coach who won’t let himself be influenced.”

It was no surprise that Argentina fired Sampaoli after a dismal 2018 World Cup campaign, which saw them scrape through the group stage and go out in the Round of 16.

Inter hitman Icardi wasn’t even part of the tournament, despite finishing as joint Capocannoniere of Serie A.

“It wasn’t a surprise for Mauro that he wasn’t called up by Sampaoli, because he knew there were other players who deserved to say goodbye to the Seleccion by playing one last World Cup,” Wanda told Italian magazine Gente.

“Argentina played badly. In order for things to change, we need a Coach with character who won’t let himself be influenced when making his decisions.

“We all want to see Argentina be world champions. I told Sampaoli that Mauro is the best Number 9 that Argentine football has, but he is also someone who can change the squad in a positive way. He is a leader, a captain and has a positive personality.”
