Cengiz Under intends to improve on his goal tally in the second season and help Roma to “finish in the top two in Serie A.”

The Turkish talent was relatively unknown when arriving from Basaksehir for €13.4m plus bonuses last summer, but impressed in his debut season with eight goals and two assists in 32 competitive games.

“We just started pre-season training and it is very tiring, but we know this hard work is necessary to get good results,” the 21-year-old said on Roma TV.

“I only scored eight goals last term, but I want to improve my score this season. I had never scored up until the game against Verona and in previous interviews said that once I broke the ice, I wouldn’t look back. That proved to be the case and I’m proud.”

Under was signed as essentially a replacement for Liverpool-bound Mohamed Salah.

“It’s difficult to make comparisons, as he is so strong, but I hope to keep improving. I’m pretty quick, but I think he’s quicker…

“The Coach has always been by my side and it was important for me to feel he had faith in me. Scoring important goals also helped my mentality, especially those against Verona and Shakhtar Donetsk.

“Our objective this season is to finish in the top two in Serie A, as we were third last time. I hope to play an important role in achieving that.”
