The Uruguay international had an impressive World Cup campaign this summer and made it clear he wanted to move on from Genoa.

Although West Ham United, Lazio and Napoli showed interest, Zenit were the most consistent and appeared to be close to a deal.

That was worth €10m plus €2m in bonuses, but the change of role at Zenit of new director of sport Javier Ribalta and difficulties with intermediaries may well have scuppered the negotiations.

According to Si Gonfia La Rete and Calciomercato.com, the price-tag has suddenly climbed to €18m plus €2m in bonuses.

Zenit still want to sign Laxalt, but the change in circumstances is bound to cause further delays.
