Luciano Spalletti warned Lautaro Martinez that there’s more to playing for Inter than scoring goals after a stunner beat Atletico Madrid.
The Nerazzurri completed the International Champions Cup tournament with a 1-0 victory away to Atletico Madrid on Saturday evening, decided by Lautaro’s acrobatic volley.
“You are interested in those who score goals, but he also has to be good at combining with his teammates, otherwise the goal isn’t worth much,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.
“Lautaro lost the ball too many times and if the defence doesn’t plug the gaps… The fans want to see a team that plays well from start to finish. They care little about seeing one moment that grabs the headlines.
“In the first half, we saw an excellent Inter. In the second half, it was a team that really needs to improve. Atleti introduced players who in a tenth of a second understand if they need to go forward or pass it back. They can read between the lines and are capable of sucking defenders out of position.
“They are really strong and everyone knows the mentality that Diego Simeone can instil in his side, but we have to do more. If we give away the ball in ridiculous situations, if when the determination steps up then some lower the tempo, there’s going to be a problem.”
Spalletti was asked if he’d like to return to the Wanda Metropolitano stadium in June, when it’ll host the 2018-19 Champions League Final.
“Yes, we’ll win the Scudetto and reach the Champions League Final, is that what you wanted me to say?”
