Empoli won the Serie B title last term and will be in the top flight, but they were torn apart on home turf by Cittadella today.

They showed big problems defending from set plays, as Scappini scored and then immediately hit the bar from another corner.

Scappini completed his brace after the restart and Finotto tapped in 10 minutes later. Cittadella held on even after Proia’s red card at the 67th minute.

Frosinone were also promoted to Serie A and yet are already out of the Coppa Italia, beaten 2-0 at home by Serie C outfit Sudtirol.

Sassuolo demolished Ternana 5-1 at the Mapei Stadium with new buy Kevin-Prince Boateng wasting no time opening the scoring on the volley, then Domenico Berardi bagged a brace.

Alfred Duncan and captain Francesco Magnanelli rounded out the scoreline to set up their next tie with Catania.

Verona barely put up a fight in their 2-0 defeat to Catania, as Tommaso Silvestri and Alessandro Marotta scored before half-time.
