Former Milan defender Daniele Bonera believes his old club are signing ‘a great player’ in Villarreal winger Samu Castillejo.

Castillejo is set to join Milan in a deal that sees Carlos Bacca stay at Villarreal, and Bonera – who spent nine years with the Rossoneri before moving to Villarreal in 2015 – is confident the starlet will flourish at San Siro.

“It’s a great signing for Milan,” the veteran told Tuttosport.

“He loves to play from the right, cut inside with his left foot and shoot. He loves to dribble and often creates numerical superiority.

“Stimulus for Suso? I think it’s more a stimulus for himself, given he comes from an important three-year spell with Villarreal. He needs to make the jump into a great team.

“Alternative to Calhanoglu? Gattuso will use him where I think he needs him the most, but he loves to play on the right, not the left.

“Of course I think he’s a great player, and he’s joining a club where he must show his value.

Bonera also passed judgment on Bacca, who scored 18 goals for the Spanish side last season.

“Carlos has done very well here, and we’ll welcome him with open arms,” he added.

“He has great experience and temperament, and he’s always made himself available to the group.”
