Atalanta star Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez expressed his dismay at a new Serie A ruling introducing standardised captain’s armbands.
The Argentina international had enjoyed showing off a different armband for each game, designed along with his wife, to reflect various issues of interest.
They covered anything from Earth Day to Halloween, nostalgia for the original Playstation and 1990s icons to women’s rights and Peppa Pig.
“I am very disappointed today, because I received a statement from the Lega Serie A where it’s explained from this season no player can personalise their own armbands,” wrote Gomez on Instagram.
“Two years ago, when nobody was paying much attention to the armbands, I had this marvellous idea to create designs that represent me as a CAPTAIN, every game different and always without disrespecting anyone.
“Unfortunately, in today’s football, the players count for less and less.”
The new armband is white with the Serie A logo and ‘Capitano’ in large letters.
