The last six months in Lisbon have been utterly chaotic, with players attacked at their training ground by hooligans, prompting some to tear up their contracts and leave as free agents.

The last six months in Lisbon have been utterly chaotic, with players attacked at their training ground by hooligans, prompting some to tear up their contracts and leave as free agents.

President Bruno de Carvalho was deposed by the Board of Directors just days after hiring Mihajlovic in June and the new leader Sousa Cintra immediately revoked his decision.

Now former Fiorentina, Bologna, Milan and Torino boss Mihajlovic is taking the club to court via the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

“I had accepted the job with great enthusiasm, even more than usual because it meant going abroad in a prestigious league that was new to me,” Mihajlovic told La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“Precisely because it was so new to me, I made sure to get all the necessary background information and precautions during the negotiations. I never expected to be not on the bench in August, but in a tribunal trying to defend myself after my rights have been trampled on.

“It was a long negotiation with the ex-President De Carvalho, as we decided on the transfer strategy, including different alternatives for the players who were trying to tear up their contracts.

“I can confirm that I was sacked without just cause by Sporting CP just a few days before the start of the contract that would’ve tied me to the club for three seasons.

“In the middle of June, I went to Lisbon to negotiate with the Sporting directors for my personal terms and those of my staff. On June 18, we signed a three-year contract that was due to start on July 1.

“A few days later, President Bruno de Carvalho was removed from his post by the Board of Directors and on June 27 the club annulled my contract, claiming I had not passed the trial period set in the Portuguese rules for contracts.

“However, they cannot say that because at that moment the contract hadn’t even started yet and I was still on vacation in Sardinia…

“In 30 years of my career, as player and then Coach, I’ve never seen anything like it. I will have my rights respected, that you can count on.”
