It’s claimed Roma left the decision up to Strootman, who accepted the switch with a considerable salary increase from €3m per year to €4.5m.

The Dutchman might not even be in the squad for tomorrow’s Serie A game with Atalanta, but should nonetheless be at the Olimpico to salute the fans.

However, Il Tempo newspaper in the Capital suggest the offer is so far closer to €22m and considered too low.

The 28-year-old has been with Roma since 2013, but his career was halted for almost two years by knee injuries.

He finally put that nightmare behind him and has been largely injury-free since February 2016.
