Borriello joined Ibiza of Spain’s third tier on Wednesday, and the Serie A journeyman explained the motives behind his surprise switch – and why it could appeal to Cassano.

“I have beautiful memories of Italian football,” the 36-year-old told Corriere della Sera.

“I gave emotions to the fans of Genoa, Cagliari, Milan and many other jerseys, and they gave me so many in return.

“I made the history in Italian football. Now I want to make the history in Spanish football. Trust me, the building blocks are in place.

“A Serie A club called me and more than one did from Serie B, but then came Ibiza’s offer and suddenly I felt the right vibrations.

“The club want to become an extra vehicle for the island’s brand around the world. Ten years ago I bought a house here. This is my home, a paradise.

“You can go and bathe at the end of the training, but it’s not just for that reason I chose Ibiza.

“A new stadium will be built, together with a hotel and training complex. The team are strong, the President has some ideas and he wants to invest.

“His name is Amadeo Salvo, the former President of Valencia. It’s a lifestyle choice but also one that involves a big project. You’ll see…

“I’m expecting a big signing, but I can’t say anything else. Another Italian? It’s a top-secret name.”
