Sampdoria technical director Walter Sabatini hailed Gregoire Defrel and “champion” Fabio Quagliarella after beating Napoli 3-0.

The Blucerchiati emerged victorious with a brace from ex-Roma striker Defrel and a wondergoal by Quagliarella.

“The real Sampdoria is the one we saw yesterday, but also the one that played and narrowly lost to Udinese. We have to take the good with the bad,” Sabatini told Gianlucadimarzio.com.

“It’s one thing to say who we are and another to say who we want to be. We want to be a strong team and we’ll get there, as we have a great Coach and a group of lads who follow his every word.

“We want to do better than last season and continue building on our ideas. It’s still a development phase, but the prospects are good.”

Sampdoria tried and failed to sign a centre-forward over the summer, losing out to Empoli for Antonino La Gumina and Torino on deadline day for Simone Zaza.

“Defrel has found the right environment for him to deliver his best. He overcame some physical problems he had at Roma, now plays with enthusiasm and this allows him to score great goals. Apart from the brace, he also put in a strong overall performance.

“As for Quagliarella’s goal, I can’t describe it, as we should all stand in silence and observe it a million times. In these situations, you tend to only glance the ball, but he really aimed it perfectly.

“Again, aside from the goal, Quagliarella was a real leader on the field. He is our champion and has to push us forward.”
