Roberto Mancini admits Italy “made too many mistakes,” but saw more of what he expects in the second half of their 1-1 draw with Poland.
Piotr Zielinski had given Poland a deserved first half lead, but Federico Chiesa came off the bench and shook things up, earning a penalty that Jorginho converted.
The Azzurri draw their opening Nations League match and will face Portugal in Lisbon on Monday evening.
“It’s the first important game, so a few errors can happen, but overall the lads did well.
“We made a few too many mistakes when playing out from the back and that gave Poland the opportunity to counter, which was what they wanted to do anyway.”
Mario Balotelli went off after an hour and seemed very out of sorts, including a muscular problem that saw an ice-pack strapped to his thigh on the bench.
“Mario needs to play, he is an experienced player on the international stage, but his fitness levels are an issue right now.
“There are many young players we can build on and I think we saw that in the second half, as we pushed forward and more importantly didn’t make as many errors in our passing.”
