The Azzurri began their Nations League campaign and the first competitive match under CT Roberto Mancini with a 1-1 draw against Poland.

It is the opening game in the tournament for Euro 2016 winners Portugal, who are without captain Cristiano Ronaldo, as he preferred to focus on training with his new club Juventus.

The last time these sides met in a competitive match was in a crucial 1994 World Cup qualifier, which the Azzurri won.

They met in a friendly in Geneva in June 2015, Eder giving Portugal a 1-0 victory which ended a run of one 0-0 draw and 10 defeats against Italy.
