Barca had reportedly targeted Monchi, whose family was said to be unhappy in Italy, but the former Sevilla man made it clear his future lay at Roma, although he did reveal he had a release clause written into his contract.

“For now I have no plans to go back to Spain because I’m happy where I am now,” he told Cadena COPE.

“It’s a different project, one where I’ve had to find the ideal Monchi for this situation. I’m not a person who lives for the future.

“I’m a lot more focused on the present and I still have several years left on my contract with Roma.

“I have a release clause, but I don’t know how much it’s worth. I should calculate it!”

The 49-year-old is currently back in his native country for the Giallorossi’s Champions League opener against Real Madrid.
