Roma’s Monchi suggests Real Madrid sold Cristiano Ronaldo because they needed ‘new motivations to win the Champions League’ again.

Madrid have won the last three Champions Leagues but will go for a fourth without Ronaldo, starting against Roma on Wednesday.

“I believe that when a team win the Champions League three times in a row, it’s not easy to find new motivations,” continued the sporting director to Cadena COPE.

“Selling Cristiano may be the motivation for the squad to prove they can win the Champions League without him. Motivation is essential.

“The favourites for the Champions League? I wouldn’t rule out City or Liverpool. Kluivert? He’s a lad with great quality, but he still needs to improve.

“Still, we’re in no hurry. He’ll become an important player for us.”
