“The Bernabeu has a lot of history behind it and it’s difficult to play here against a team that has won absolutely everything,” the director of sport told Roma TV.

“It’s wonderful to begin the journey here and we hope to go as far as possible, even if it’s tough. We have to be honest, at this moment in time, our form isn’t great and we’re not in the position we hoped to be in right now.

“Tough moments are natural in a season, the important thing is to recognise the problem and work to resolve it. The team knows that we all must improve, not just the players on the field. This is a great opportunity to get back on track.

“A good result would really boost confidence and that is a very big part of it. Players are people too and nobody is infallible, so confidence is key.”

Summer signing Justin Kluivert was tipped for the starting XI today, yet he is not even on the bench.

“It’s not easy, as we have so many talented players and can only bring 18 in total for Champions League matches, so someone has to sit out. There’s a long way to go and there’ll be time for everyone.”

Former Sevilla director Monchi has fond memories of the Bernabeu in Madrid.

“I won the Spanish Super Cup here in 2008. That is my favourite memory here so far, although that could change tonight.”
