Stefano Pioli wants Fiorentina to “play a positive and attacking style of football in any arena, against any opponent” after beating SPAL 3-0.

The Spallini had nine points from four rounds going into the Stadio Franchi and had conceded only one goal, but were steamrollered this evening.

“I think this Fiorentina has the quality to play a positive and attacking style of football. We can’t always go at full pelt, but we played with the right determination and mentality. These fans inevitably give us something more when we play at home,” Viola Coach Pioli told Sky Sport Italia.

“The number of forwards on the pitch doesn’t decide how many goals we get. We can play with several if everybody is prepared to work hard, track back and help out.

“We ran few risks against Napoli, even if we eventually lost, and those are the only real regrets of the season so far. We needed more belief in ourselves and our approach to the sport.

“We also drew with Sampdoria, who are one of the form teams in Serie A at the moment and remarkably strong on their home turf. I want us to play the same way against any opponent, in any arena, whether it’s a mid-table club or the leaders.

“I think today we controlled the game against a side that dominated Atalanta only a few days ago, so that is not to be underestimated.”

Kevin Mirallas came off the bench today and made a good impression as a substitute, but Pioli revealed he had extra motivation.

“It’s very important for me that Mirallas ran out like that and reacted on the field, because he was angry with me and wanted to start the match today.

“He expected to start, but he proved that he reacted the right way and I am glad players are fired up if they don’t get to start. They all deserve to play and unfortunately I have to make some choices, but they can all try to prove me wrong.”

Federico Chiesa scored a goal and ran over to celebrate with his younger brother Lorenzo, who is a ball-boy at Fiorentina, with father Enrico watching in the stands.

Ex-Parma and Fiorentina striker Enrico caused some controversy last month by suggesting Lorenzo was the real talent in the family.

“Federico is becoming a truly wonderful player. He already has comparisons with his Dad, if we compare him with his younger brother then that’s too much!”
