Roberto De Zerbi insists Sassuolo “deserve” to be in third place after their 2-0 victory away to SPAL and welcomed Alessandro Matri’s goal.

The Neroverdi have put together 13 points from six Serie A rounds and are the top scorers in the tournament.

“We are getting the results we deserve during these six rounds. We don’t know if 13 points in six games represent the norm for Sassuolo, but we’re certainly going to enjoy the moment,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“I am working with some fine talents and compliment the squad for providing me with 21-22 excellent players. I made changes to the line-up this evening not as part of squad rotation, but because I needed the characteristics of Jeremie Boga and Filip Djuricic.”

Veteran Matri came off the bench and in only a handful of minutes managed to hit the woodwork and score Sassuolo’s second goal.

“He’s a real professional who trains with great dedication. This goal is the right reward for his efforts. Djuricic is a favourite of mine and ought to be admired by everyone who loves football. I did get angry over his miss, because he has to be less bark and more bite.”

Sassuolo are flying high in third and De Zerbi was asked if they could be this season’s Atalanta.

“It would be nice, as I look up to their Coach Gian Piero Gasperini. I don’t like teams that tip-toe on to the field, playing with flip-flops. We need the right mix of quality and quantity.”
