Referees chief Marcello Nicchi has warned Serie A officials who do not use VAR correctly that they ‘will sit out’.

The season has already been marred by several instances of referees not consulting the VAR when there have been moments of contention, the latest being Federico Chiesa’s perceived dive during Fiorentina’s 2-0 win against Atalanta, which was deemed a penalty without a review.

“VAR works and must be applied properly,” Nicchi told Gr Parlamento.

“VAR works and must be applied properly,” Nicchi told Gr Parlamento.

“The protocol is the one we approved last year and the referees are applying it. Every now and then someone may not use it, but [Nicola] Rizzoli will take care of that.

“Those who don’t adhere to the rules will sit out.”
