Jurgen Klopp admits Liverpool’s defeat to Napoli “is deserved” and “we were just not good enough” at the Stadio San Paolo.

Alisson Becker had to make several saves and Dries Mertens hit the bar just moments before Lorenzo Insigne’s late winner.

“The defeat is deserved, we don’t have to make a story out of it. We had our moments, but too often the formation was not right. We moved in the wrong spaces. The three midfielders, the job was nearly impossible,” Klopp told BT Sport.

“We have to stay calm in a situation like that. Not much happened in the first half. With the ball we were too hectic and there was no need to be hectic. We had a few good moments but for sure not enough.

“We made a big tactical mistake before the goal, we conceded already like that this season against Chelsea. They were on their bikes, the atmosphere was there and we let them do it. That’s it, the story of the game.”

This was the first time since 2012 that Liverpool failed to have a single shot on target, as David Ospina was practically never troubled.

“We ran too long with the ball. When the midfield or full backs got there, we lost the ball already. Tonight we were just not good enough. We have to blame ourselves.”

This Champions League group is now wide open, as Napoli lead on four points, followed by Liverpool and Paris Saint-Germain on three. Red Star Belgrade have one point.
