This game was organised at Marassi to help raise funds for those affected by the Ponte Morandi collapse, which killed 43 people on August 14 and left hundreds homeless.

Yesterday the Azzurri and Ukraine squads both paid a visit to the scene of the disaster and met with some of those forced to leave their houses.

“It was an honour for us to be able to pay homage to those who suffered the tragedy of Ponte Morandi, to have brought a smile to them even for just a brief moment,” the Coach told Rai Sport.

“For tonight, we hope Italy can put in a good performance and win. From tomorrow, we can think about Poland.”

There are several changes to the line-up against Ukraine in tonight’s friendly, including the debut for 21-year-old Cagliari midfielder Barella.

“Barella is a young lad of great prospects, he is making his senior Italy debut today and we are happy about that. We hope he can give his contribution.”

It is a 4-3-3 with Napoli star Insigne seemingly used as the False 9, flanked by Federico Bernardeschi and Federico Chiesa.

“Insigne is a forward. When a player has the qualities of Insigne, he can play anywhere, without any issues.”
