Javier Zanetti believes Inter are just starting out a new great era and will eventually partner Mauro Icardi with Lautaro Martinez.

The heroes of the 2010 Treble got together for the Festival dello Sport event, after which Vice-President Zanetti spoke to La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“That Inter and this current squad are in two very different situations. We were reaching the apex of an era. Being back in the Champions League is already a starting point, but we have what it takes to do well,” said the Argentine.

“The upcoming games against Milan and Barcelona are very important. Obviously, the Derby di Milano is ‘The Game’ and both teams go into it on good form. It’s a pity some will return late from international duty and we won’t have much time to prepare.

“The Derby I remember most fondly was the first meeting in 2010, which we won 4-0. Everyone wants to take part in a game like this and I hope we can win.

“Beating Barcelona is possible, as football is a very balanced game and every team has someone who can pull something out at any moment.”

Lautaro Martinez scored his first senior goal for Argentina in a friendly against Iraq, so will we see him partner Mauro Icardi at club and international level?

“He is young and certainly bodes well for the future. Luciano Spalletti is doing a great job as Coach and it’s up to him to decide. When it’ll be possible, they will play together. I am convinced that great players can always co-exist.

“I hope that Icardi can become a symbol of Inter. He seems very happy and I hope he continues with us for a long time.”

Zanetti spent almost his entire playing career at Inter and remained as Vice-President, but President Erick Thohir will reportedly soon sell his shares to Suning, handing over the role to Steven Zhang.

“I have a good rapport with Steven, he is young and intelligent, while he has been working for the club for some time now. I am glad to know new aspects of work in football. I often go around the world trying to lift the name of Inter to where it should be.”
