Umberto Gandini confirmed he will not be returning to Milan, as Ivan Gazidis takes over, so he is now a free agent after leaving his role at Roma.

When he suddenly terminated his contract as Roma CEO by mutual consent in late September, it was widely believed he’d make a beeline for Milan.

Gandini had already been their managing director from 1993 and 2016, leaving after Yonghong Li’s takeover from Silvio Berlusconi.

Gandini had already been their managing director from 1993 and 2016, leaving after Yonghong Li’s takeover from Silvio Berlusconi.

“It was a complex summer,” the 58-year-old said on Sky Sport Italia.

“Gazidis deciding to accept the Milan job brought me to have a series of meetings. We’ve had a good rapport for years, as I do with Elliott Management.

“However, we recognised that as things stand, there aren’t the right conditions for my return. I remain a free agent, while Gazidis will take over at Milan from December 1. It’s up to him now to take the club back to the top.

“I feel free to make my next decision, something I’ve not experienced over the last 25 years. I can calmly evaluate the opportunities that I hope can present themselves.”

Gazidis was poached from his role as chief executive of Arsenal.
