“These are two clubs that are almost new and two teams that are still a work in progress,” Crespo told La Stampa newspaper.

“Inter are at a more advanced stage of their development right now, as after six years they are back in the Champions League and Suning have been working on this project longer than Elliott Management.

“Milan are coming off a chaotic period. With Leonardo and Paolo Maldini as directors, at least they are starting to recreate some of that identity, but they need a few more years to get back to the golden era.”

Both Milanese giants rely heavily on an Argentina international centre-forward.

“I think Higuain is ideal for Gennaro Gattuso’s tactics. The same goes for Icardi at Inter, as Luciano Spalletti’s wingers are perfect for setting up a deadly finisher like him,” continued Crespo.

“I was a mix between the two. I would move like Icardi in front of goal, but participate more in the build-up play like Higuain.”

Crespo is one of the few to have played for both Milan clubs, but revealed he came close to joining Juventus too.

“In 2000, when (Parma President Calisto) Tanzi preferred to sell me to Lazio, but Juve didn’t have it too bad considering they ended up signing David Trezeguet instead… After Calciopoli, Juventus tried to sign me again with Giovanni Cobolli Gigli, but I chose to remain at Inter.”

The title race is now a very limited scope in Serie A, according to the Argentine.

“Juventus are in another dimension now. I don’t see how they could lose the Scudetto without self-destructing. It’ll be like that for another two or three years, as Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival shows the extent of the gap.”
