Gian Piero Gasperini apologised for ruining Giampiero Ventura’s Chievo debut, but Atalanta “needed this win too much.”

The Orobici emerged 5-1 winners at the Bentegodi with a hat-trick for Josip Ilicic.

“We were coming off a shocking period of results and needed this win too much. I would’ve been happy to win even with a smaller margin,” Gasp told Sky Sport Italia.

“Clearly, after Chievo went down to 10 men, we pushed a bit more just to be on the safe side, but then they lost confidence and enthusiasm.

“Hopefully this can be a turning point for us. Ilicic brought quality, as did Papu Gomez, while their movements and combinations create space for the midfielders to push up too.

“These three points are a confidence booster for us.”
