Paulo Dybala’s early effort proved enough at Old Trafford, where they visitors had almost 70 per cent possession in the first half.

“Manchester United stepped up the pressure in the second half and we weren’t moving as much, so we struggled to find a free man with our passes,” Bonucci told Sky Sport Italia.

“We were solid and still allowed them practically nothing. This system really helped us in the absence of Mario Mandzukic, as there were spaces between the lines, Dybala came back towards the midfield, Cristiano Ronaldo attacked the shoulder of the defender and we put our ideas into practice.”

There was only one real chance from open play, resolved with a fantastic Bonucci tackle on Anthony Martial.

“He managed to get round the back of Joao Cancelo. We’ve got to help each other out back there, at times I cover, at others someone covers for me. It all went perfectly.”
