The former Italy and Bologna boss was considered the hot favourite if Gattuso were to be dismissed.

When there were suggestions Donadoni had dinner with Rossoneri directors Leonardo and Paolo Maldini, he hit back.

“I have been fair and open all my life, making that a central tenet of my career and existence, so I certainly wouldn’t have a dinner behind someone’s back,” declared Donadoni to news agency Ansa.

“There was no dinner with the Rossoneri directors. Besides which, according to the media reports that was 35 days ago, but I was in Japan from September 13-25 and still have the plane tickets as proof.

“It is bad taste to talk about non-existent dinners, both for me and for a colleague like Gattuso.”
