Another twist in the seemingly endless Serie B saga, as an appeal has been accepted to suspend the order of a return to 22 teams.

When Cesena, Bari and Avellino went bankrupt over the summer, rather than replace them with other clubs, it was decided to simply reduce Serie B from 22 sides to 19.

Ever since then, several other teams who could’ve been promoted instead (Novara, Ternana, Virtus Entella, Catania, Robur Siena) have been waging a legal battle to have the division expanded back to 22.

Despite the fact the Week 9 fixtures are this weekend – and already started with last night’s 1-1 draw between Palermo and Venezia – the TAR tribunal of the Lazio region accepted an appeal from the other clubs on Wednesday to have Serie B expanded to 22 for the current campaign.

Today, the Lega Serie B (union of the current 19 clubs) won its own appeal to have that ruling suspended by the Consiglio di Stato Government court.

A decision by the Consiglio Federale is expected on Tuesday.

It is only a stay of execution, but the more time this takes, the less likely the other clubs will be able to change a season that is in full swing.
