Umberto Gandini says he was ‘no longer needed’ by Roma, ‘there was no space’ for him back at Milan but ‘would like to work’ for the FIGC.

Gandini was expected to return to Milan after he left Roma last month but with the Rossoneri since appointing Ivan Gazidis as their new CEO, the 58-year-old’s next port of call could be the FIGC

“I left Roma because from a certain point of view, it got to a point where I was no longer needed,” he told Radio Anch’io Sport.

“There was then a chance of returning to Milan and so we reached an agreement on ending my contract prematurely.

“For better or worse I couldn’t return to Milan, despite the news that they’d been chasing me for a long time.

“Gazidis and I agreed that there were no conditions for me to go back. The club assessed the pros and cons of every possibility.

“Gazidis is a great professional and was Elliott’s first choice. He’d expressed an interest in collaborating with me, but it soon became clear that there was no space for a No 2.

“Roma are club who are growing and from an organisational point of view, they’re developing in the name of their President.

“He’s very involved in Roma’s daily life. He preferred a direct relationship with the club’s sporting management rather than through a CEO.

“Working for the FIGC? It’s more of a media issue than anything else. I have all the numbers to interest the FIGC and the national team is an environment I’d like to work in, but until now there’s been no contact.”
