Dries Mertens has made history by becoming the top all-time Belgian scorer in Serie A and equalling Napoli hero Careca.
He found the net with a stunning strike from distance in this evening’s encounter with Empoli at the Stadio San Paolo.
It was his 73rd Serie A goal, allowing him to equal the tally set by Brazilian Scudetto star Careca, making him joint sixth in the all-time club charts.
In tribute to Careca, he celebrated the goal by replicating the famous ‘samba’ moves seen in Serie A from 1987 to 1994.

That’s not all, because Mertens also became the all-time top Belgian goal-scorer in Serie A history, surpassing Luis Oliveira’s 72.
It was his 96th competitive goal in a Napoli jersey in 249 appearances.
