Dries Mertens celebrated his hat-trick after Napoli’s 5-1 victory over Empoli and made it clear he wants to start against Paris Saint-Germain.

The first goal this evening was his 75th in Serie A, making him the all-time top Belgian scorer in the Italian top flight by surpassing Luis Oliveira’s tally.

It also allowed him to match Scudetto hero Careca’s total of 75 Serie A goals for Napoli, becoming joint-sixth top marksman for the club.

He went on to complete a hat-trick, so now has 77 in Serie A and 98 for Napoli in all competition.

“For two years I’ve been playing as a striker and got a hat-trick, so I wanted one this season too!” Mertens told Sky Sport Italia.

“You can see the team is doing very well and so are many individual players, so we are trying to make the most of it and keep growing together.

“I must be honest, Empoli pass it around well and play some really nice football.”

It’s a strong response after Mertens told reporters he was annoyed at not starting in the 1-1 draw with Roma last week.

“I don’t say that I should play always. I just noted that the Roma game was really big and I was in good shape, so I wanted to take part. I was cross after the final whistle and it’s not the best time to give interviews, but the day after we talked it over and immediately sorted things out.”

So will he play against Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday?

“Definitely!”
