Simone Inzaghi was “surprised” by Marseille’s change of tactics, but praised Lazio for their 2-1 victory and Europa League qualification.

The 2-1 result mathematically secured their spot in the next phase, knocking out last season’s Finalists.

“The lads did well, we picked up six points from two games against Marseille and it’s the second season in a row we’re qualified with two matches to spare,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“The lads did well, we picked up six points from two games against Marseille and it’s the second season in a row we’re qualified with two matches to spare,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We wanted this qualification and thoroughly deserved it. It was a difficult group and Marseille were in the Final last season, while Eintracht Frankfurt have a perfect record.

“Marseille’s passing caused us problems in the first half, yet we allowed them practically no chances. To be honest, their tactical changes surprised us, as they’d never played with a five-man defence before and we had to change everything that we had prepared.

“In a way, we were helped by the fact we’d played SPAL last week and they had a similar approach to the one Marseille used this evening.”

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Luis Alberto came on for late cameos, but seemed irritable and off form.

“Milinkovic is improving constantly, while Luis Alberto had an injury that stalled his progress. There is also more competition for places this season, as Correa and Felipe Caicedo have done very well.

“Fortunately, we are playing in Europe and can continue to alternate the players.”
