Parma Coach Roberto D’Aversa assures they didn’t “just defend and counter” after a surprise 2-1 victory away to Torino, but having Gervinho back helped.

The Ducali had amassed one point and not a single goal from their previous three games going into Turin.

“Gervinho and Roberto Inglese are players who raise the quality level of the squad, but rather than talk about them, I’d rather focus on Alessandro Bastoni in his first start, Matteo Scozzarella back after a long time out,” D’Aversa told Sky Sport Italia.

“When we approach the game with this type of determination and aggression, we have caused problems for sides that are far more prestigious than us.

“In the last few games, we brought home very little, so sitting back in the long-run doesn’t pay off, especially with players like Lorenzo De Silvestri running at you.

“We wanted to take a pro-active approach here and prove we can take on anyone. We had the chances to score a third goal and it’s just a pity we conceded basically on a throw-in.

“The intention was to provide the kind of service that Gervinho and Inglese could enjoy. It certainly wasn’t just defend and counter, we had an excellent opening half-hour and it was not easy to come here to put in this type of performance.

“Of course, once we take the lead, we try to make the most of the characteristics of players like Gervinho and Jonathan Biabiany. We knew that Toro would push forward and we could take advantage with some passes round the back of them, but we didn’t play on the counter throughout.

“If we analyse the match throughout, we do need to make more of our chances, as we can’t keep leaving the result in the balance with the number of scoring opportunities we had today.

“Having said that, we are a newly-promoted side, we’ve scored 12 goals this season and I think the criticism in recent weeks has been extreme.”
