“San Siro always gives a special response. I think we’re on the right path, as we controlled it for 70 minutes with a lot of great play and chances, but we must make more of our scoring opportunities,” Chiellini told Rai Sport.

“We worked so hard and then in the final half-hour were exhausted, which took away sharpness and meant we risked at the back. We couldn’t control the match the same way because it was still 0-0.

“We’ve got the foundations, we dominated the reigning European Champions and the issue of not scoring goals will improve with time.

“We’re still getting to know each other, there’s another friendly on Tuesday and from March the three points start to really count – although I think we did honour the Nations League and played for the result.”
